More Nutrition.....

A Reason for Organics:  Avoiding Endocrine Disruptors

Most health/nutrition conscious athletes choose organic produce when they can---we want the healthiest food/fuel to be able to recover fast, so we can train again.  Organics just makes sense.  But is the organic produce we buy ACTUALLY more nutrient dense?  It's not really clear cut---there's been studies on both sides.  That point aside, one of the MAIN reasons for choosing organics should be micronutrient content; it should be because of what's NOT there:
?“A large body of evidence has accumulated linking specific conditions to ED pesticides in wildlife and humans” --2008 Feb;34(2):168-83. Epub 2007 Sep 18.  Endocrine disrupting pesticides: implications for risk assessment.

Thyroid hormone production can be inhibited by some ten endocrine disruptor pesticides(amitrole, cyhalothrin, fipronil, ioxynil, maneb, mancozeb, pentachloronitro-benzene,prodiamine, pyrimethanil, thiazopyr, ziram, zineb)
??“Most of the newly discovered hormone disruptors are fungicides applied to fruit and vegetable crops, including strawberries and lettuce. Traces of the chemicals remain infoods”—Scientific American, Pesticides May Block Male Hormones, Feb /2011
This is just the tip of the iceberg; it's essential for hormonal health to avoid as many endocrine disruptors as possible.  The Environmental Working Group has a great list called "The Dirty Dozen" (here).  Other areas to examine:  Plastics use in the kitchen, soy intake, and personal care products.  Big topic, with a big long-term health impact.
